Zen's Top 5 Favourite Christmas Ads
With Christmas just around the corner, the Zen office has decided to highlight some of their favourite Christmas Ads throughout the last few years... What's your favourite ad?
In no particular order, the Zen Agency’s top 5 Christmas Ads are…
Coca-Cola: Holidays are coming (1995)
This advert is iconic. For many people, seeing the Coca-Cola truck on your screen symbolises Christmas is here. The original advert saw a convoy of Coca-Cola trucks lit up and travelling through the snow, with the tagline “Nothing lites up Christmas like Coca-Cola”. The holidays are coming advert has been adapted throughout the year since its debut in 1995 and has been broadcasted in more than 100 countries to millions of users. The ad is such a Christmas cult figure, the truck even has its own Christmas tour.

Irn Bru: Phenomenal Christmas (2007)
Arguably Scotland’s greatest-ever Christmas advert. It’s a genius mock-up of Raymond Brigg’s animation “The Snowman”. However, in Irn-Bru’s version, the snowman is dumbfounded and outraged when the boy won’t share his Irn Bru with him which results in the snowman stealing the can of ginger off him and letting go of his hand, in true Irn-Bru fashion.
Throughout the ad, the pair fly over some of Scotland's most iconic landmarks like the Forth Bridge, Royal Concert Hall, and the Falkirk Wheel.

John Lewis: Monty the Penguin (2014)
John Lewis is the king of Christmas adverts, with the country waiting in anticipation for their release every year. One of their most popular ads was “Monty the Penguin” which hit 27 million views on YouTube alone. The ad tugs at the heartstrings and documents a boy’s relationship with his penguin “pal”. This ad had a cover of the Beatle's “real love” and helped add to the emotional ad.
John Lewis created a mascot that they could use and also sell in stores.
Aldi: Kevin the Carrot is home alone (2022)
To compete with John Lewis and their Christmas Ads, Aldi joined the mascot bandwagon with Kevin the Carrot, launched in 2016 and featured ever since. This campaign used the Christmas film “Home-Alone” as its inspiration. It follows Kevin and his family as they board a plane to Paris, however, Kevin is missing and the ad cuts to Kevin battling against an intruder with a series of Home-Alone traps.
The ad has been a massive success with over 70,000 queued online for Aldi’s Kevin the Carrot merchandise

National Lottery: A Christmas Love Story (2022)
Directed by Oscar-winner Tom Hooper, the ad tells a story of a chance encounter between two people who meet on a train and fall in love, however in a rush of panic they exchange a phone number on the back of a lottery ticket. In true romance fashion, the girl realises the number is smudged. Will they ever meet again?
The campaign kept viewers enthralled throughout whilst highlighting factors like “chance” and “luck” throughout the story, which resonates with the National Lottery readers.
